THE FISHERMAN, a feature film by Ghanaian director Zoey Martinson, tells the story of Atta Oko, a fisherman who has worked in a small coastal village for decades. When he is forced into retirement, his life is suddenly turned upside down. But then a talking fish gets caught in his net, and everything changes… The comedy sheds light on the struggle to preserve traditional fishing practices in the face of rapid urban development and expanding commercial seaports, while also using the stylistic device of magic realism to dramatize real issues such as displacement and environmental destruction in a humorous way.
